Our rapidly growing product development team is looking for a Fuel Cell Stack – Unit Cell Principal Engineer to build on our patented eFlow® technology in designing future generation stacks as we scale-up for volume production. Reporting to the Stack Team Lead, the Fuel Cell Stack – Unit Cell Principal Engineer will own the unit cell design from conception to product validation.  Position Responsibilities:


  • Responsible for architecting the overall unit cell design 
  • Set and cascade requirements for the unit cell components including stack hardware, plates, seals, and MEAs
  • Develop interface requirements for components and assemblies
  • Theoretical/empirical fuel cell (unit cell, stack, and or system) performance modeling – model creation, validation, and optimization
  • Performance modeling for optimization analysis of the following:       
  • Plates (channel geometry, water management) for cathode, coolant and anode loops
  • Structural/Thermal analysis of plates, seals, stack, and BOP
  • Use of standard analysis tools: FEA, CFD, MATLAB
  • Keep up to date on state-of-the-art plate design from patents and competitors’ landscape
  • Support development of testing methodologies to validate/corroborate above models
  • Align design and release activities with key component suppliers
  • Work closely with the team of engineers providing design direction in requirements setting and optimization of above components
  • Facilitate detailed design reviews and documentation of the design process
  • Create a system specifications to be cascaded to component owners
  • Oversee the tolerance stack-ups of the unit cell assembly
  • Interface with stack engineers, engine team, quality, manufacturing and purchasing teams
  • Manage product cycles from concept to market launch, including testing and post-launch support
  • Communicate with suppliers to ensure manufactured parts meet specification and timing
  • Support prototype builds and perform component validation and verification
  • Support sub-scale test hardware development

 Position Requirements:


  • Bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering or related
  • 7-10 years of experience in product design
  • 5 years of experience in Unit Cell design
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and understanding of manufacturing methods (plates, seals, MEAs, assembly, etc.)
  • Good knowledge of fluids, thermodynamics and heat transfer
  • Understanding of fuel cell electrochemical reactions
  • Understanding of design verification and validation, ability to incorporate learnings in future designs
  • Ability to bring products from prototype level to a mid/high volume design
  • Product development skills: DFMEA, DFMA, tolerance analysis, GD&T
  • Application of structured problem-solving methods (8D, 5-whys)
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Proficiency in MS Office

 Other key assets:


  • Strong 3D CAD design (Solidworks preferred)
  • Unit Cell Specific FEA/CFD experience (Comsol/Ansys/Matlab)
  • VA/VE experience
